Less Is More

"Less Is More" by Jason Jennings, book cover has a tag line "How Great Companies Use Productivity as a COMPETITIVE TOOL in Business". This book is really worth reading. Everyone in Business want to increase productivity- more output and less input, lower cost and higher profits. "Less Is More" is all about how to increase business productivity by keeping lower input cost. This books deals with many companies and how each company managed to earn more profit with less input. The kind of hard work every company put to keep the low input cost, the out-of-the-box thinking of each company are mind blowing.

This book provides the different prospective on productivity than one typically learns in MBA or other such programs. This book simply illustrates the concept "Cut of the Fat" and make company work on simple principals. Author insists with various real life examples of big companies; to reduce cost for the management team, communications, organizational structure, decision making, internal processes, analytics/measurements, education/training, and finance etc. or where ever possible.

"Less Is More" shows that with example of some managers in successful companies  who take efforts to implement non traditional (very precisely: unorthodox) approaches towards restructuring their organization, their teams, their processes, production methods to name but few.

"Less Is More" is classically divided into five simple categories and each category has some chapters in it. Very well described. Simple to understand.

First category is 'Focus' which is divided into into two chapters; "A Simple BIG Objective"; which talks about decision made by many manager in companies to keep simple but BIG objective about the Business. This chapter starts with a very brilliant statement made by Bill Zollars, CEO of YELLOW Pages,  "In the absence of a simple BIG objective to act as a unifying force, no leader or manager can hope to make company more productive".  second chapter is "The Hard work Begins", after getting Simple BIG Objective actual hard work starts and how companies achieved it.

Second category is STREMLINE, this is the beautiful part of the book where actual insides of businesses is described. The part which I liked is WTGBRTDT, "What is The Good Business Reason To Do This?", if every business man or manager ask this question before taking any decision then there is going to be sure shot improvement in productivity of the company. Every manager has insisted in keeping everything simple. Just keep things simple and transparent to be more productive. If manager is like this then employees will start feeling sense of belonging with the company and that is what matters. This part also discuss about Layoffs, continuous improvement, compensation, financial drives etc...

Third category is DIGITIZED and Fourth is MOTIVATE, again the explanation about motivation is too good and it is covered under chapter  name keeping everyone on the same Productivity Page.
Fifth category is EMBODY.

Very good book to learn so called MEANINGFUL productivity....!!!
